The Mongolian Lunar New Year, known as "Tsagaan Sar" or "White Moon," has its origins deeply rooted in the nomadic culture and agricultural traditions of the Mongolian people. Dating back over a thousand years, Tsagaan Sar marks the beginning of the lunar calendar year and the end of winter, symbolizing renewal, prosperity, and the arrival of spring. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence across Mongolia, as families gather to honor their ancestors, express gratitude for the past year's blessings, and welcome the opportunities of the year ahead.

The development of Tsagaan Sar as a cultural tradition reflects the historical and cultural evolution of Mongolia, blending indigenous customs with influences from neighboring regions such as China and Tibet. Unique to Mongolian Lunar New Year celebrations is the practice of preparing and sharing traditional foods such as "buuz" (steamed dumplings filled with meat), "khuushuur" (deep-fried meat pies), and "borts" (dried meat), as well as dairy products like "aaruul" (dried curds) and "tsagaan idee" (white foods). These symbolic dishes represent abundance, prosperity, and the cyclical nature of life.

Rituals and customs associated with Tsagaan Sar are deeply ingrained in Mongolian culture and reflect the values of family, community, and respect for elders. Prior to the festival, families engage in thorough cleaning of their homes, symbolizing the cleansing of negative energies and the preparation for new beginnings. On the day of Tsagaan Sar, families dress in traditional attire, exchange greetings and well-wishes, and offer ceremonial gifts such as "hadag" (silk scarves) and "khaalag" (traditional cookies) to their elders as a sign of respect. Additionally, rituals such as "zolgokh" (tea ceremony) and "shagai" (ankle bone games) are performed to bring good fortune and prosperity for the coming year. Despite modernization and urbanization, Tsagaan Sar remains a cherished and deeply meaningful celebration for the Mongolian people, preserving the rich cultural heritage and traditions of their ancestors for generations to come.
